The Experience

The Samaria Gorge is located in the White Mountains of Crete and is one of the most famous hikes in Greece. Stretching 16 km from the Omalos Plateau to the Libyan Sea, it is the longest gorge in Europe.

This hike is primarily downhill, but its length and rocky terrain make it physically demanding.

  • Upper Section (Omalos): Steep descent through pine forest with wooden steps and rocky switchbacks.
  • Middle Gorge: Riverbed walking, shaded canyon, and abandoned village of Samaria.
  • Iron Gates: The narrowest section (just 3 meters wide) with towering cliffs up to 300 m.

The hike ends at Agia Roumeli, a coastal village accessible only by boat or foot, making the experience truly unique.
